What Is General Cable? The Legacy Company vs. the Prysmian Group Brand

I've been handling cable orders for commercial projects for about eight years now. I've personally made—and documented—eleven significant purchasing mistakes, totaling roughly $25,000 in wasted budget. I keep the list because it pays for itself every time someone on my team is about to repeat one of my errors.

The topic that confuses people more than any other is General Cable. Not because the wire is bad—it isn't. Because the name means two different things depending on when you're asking.

If you search "what is General Cable," you'll get two versions of the answer:

  • The old General Cable—a publicly traded American manufacturer, headquartered in Highland Heights, Kentucky, with roots back to the 1880s.
  • The new General Cable—a brand inside the Prysmian Group, after a roughly $3 billion acquisition that closed in 2018.

Both answers are correct. That's exactly where the confusion starts.

So let's compare the two versions across three dimensions: the company behind the name, the copper vs. fiber product line, and the manufacturing footprint—including the Sedalia, MO plant that still shows up on spec sheets.

Dimension 1: The Company Behind the Name

Conclusion: the name stayed, the corporate entity didn't.

If you ordered General Cable in 2016, your purchase order went to General Cable Corporation. That company controlled its own factories, its own pricing, its own sales structure. It was an American fixture, with brands like Carol and Helix under its roof.

After 2018, that changed. Prysmian integrated General Cable into its group structure. Today, a quote for a "General Cable" product often comes from a Prysmian entity, not the old independent corporation. The product lines, the UL listings, and the manufacturing certifications carried over—but the legal entity you're contracting with didn't.

This isn't an academic detail. I screwed this up in 2022. I approved a PO, then noticed the invoice came back under a Prysmian entity name. My first thought: the vendor swapped products on me. I spent an hour calling around before someone calmly explained, "Yes, that's how it works now."

The lesson on my checklist: confirm the legal entity on the quote before signing. You may be perfectly fine buying the same product. But you deserve to know who you're actually doing business with.

Dimension 2: Copper vs. Fiber

Conclusion: the acquisition upgraded the fiber story more than anything else.

The old General Cable was a copper company, first and foremost. THHN building wire, SOOW portable cord, VNTC control cable, Cat6 and Cat6a data cable—that was their strength. Fiber was in the catalog, but it wasn't the headline. In 2015, nobody said "General Cable fiber" with the same confidence they'd say "Corning fiber."

Prysmian flipped that. Prysmian is one of the largest fiber optic cable manufacturers in the world. Once they folded General Cable in, the fiber product line got a serious upgrade.

What that means practically:

  • Before: if you wanted General Cable's reliability on copper plus a solid fiber solution, you often juggled two or three vendors.
  • After: you can spec a whole system—Cat6a for horizontal runs, OM4 multimode inside the building, OS2 single-mode for the outdoor path—under one brand relationship.

That part of the acquisition is a clear win for buyers.

But it creates a new trap. "Fiber" isn't one thing.

I almost cost a client a chunk of change because I asked for "fiber" and didn't specify the mode. The project needed OS2 single-mode for a 1.4-kilometer outdoor run. The quote I reviewed assumed OM3 multimode, which would've been great for about 100 meters. Not for 1.4 km.

I had two hours to confirm that quote before the client's budget deadline. Normally I'd walk through the spec line by line, but there was no time. I hit send and immediately wondered if I'd caught everything. Didn't relax until a colleague flagged the modal type two days later.

Use the standards, is my point. They exist for a reason:

  • Cat6 per ANSI/TIA-568.2-D: 250 MHz, 10GBASE-T up to 55 meters.
  • Cat6a per ANSI/TIA-568.2-D: 500 MHz, 10GBASE-T up to 100 meters.
  • OM3/OM4 multimode: laser-optimized, 10GBASE-SR up to 300/400 meters.
  • OS2 single-mode: the kilometer-range option.

If a quote doesn't say which fiber type you're buying, you don't have a fiber quote yet. You have a guess with a price tag.

Dimension 3: The Plant Network, Including Sedalia MO

Conclusion: a plant reference on a spec sheet doesn't guarantee which factory ships your order.

General Cable has operated plants in places like Lincoln, Rhode Island; Marion, Indiana; Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; and Sedalia, Missouri. Those facilities made a lot of quality wire over the years. And "General Cable Sedalia MO" still shows up in factory codes and catalog references—which leads buyers to assume local stock or fast freight.

That assumption bit me last year. I was pricing an order for a job in Kansas City. The spec referenced the Sedalia MO facility. Great—basically in my backyard. I told the client to expect two-day freight.

Then the PO went through, and the material came from a different facility. I want to say it was VNTC control cable from another plant, but I might be misremembering the exact product. What I remember clearly is the freight overage and the three-day slip in delivery.

The hidden cost was my own assumption, not the product's price. That's why I now ask "what's not included in that lead time?" before I ask about pricing. Put another way: I want to hear the plant origin, the freight lane, and any consolidation points before I commit to a total cost.

Which One Should You Buy?

The old independent General Cable no longer exists. You're buying the Prysmian Group brand whether you like it or not. That's fine—in my experience, the products are still solid and the fiber lineup is stronger than it's ever been.

What will actually hurt you is assumption: assuming the invoice name matches the old company, assuming "Sedalia" means your order ships from Sedalia, assuming "fiber" means the right mode for your distance.

The buyers who make General Cable work without drama are the ones who confirm the legal entity, ask for the actual manufacturing location, specify the exact TIA/UL standard in writing, and demand all-in pricing on day one.

That last one matters to me. A vendor who lists every fee up front—even when the total looks a bit higher—costs less in the end. The vendor who quotes a low per-foot number and lets freight, minimums, and expedite charges surprise you later isn't cheaper. At least, that's been my experience across eleven mistakes and counting.

So next time you're comparing quotes, ask the question I now ask first: "What's NOT included?" Because if you're buying General Cable today, the brand will likely hold up. Your assumptions—about the company, the plant, and the fiber—are the part that usually doesn't.
