General Cable, Cypress, or Infinity—A Cable Brand Is Not a Spec

I Used to Think Brand Names Did the Work

I've been handling cable and wire orders for eight years. In that time I've personally made—and documented—fourteen significant mistakes. The wasted budget is roughly $51,000. That is not a qualification. It's a warning label.

Before you assume I was careless, let me say what I thought I was doing right. I started every spec with a brand I trusted. General Cable was on my list because it had been around for more than a century, because its catalog covered everything from control cable to Cat6a, and because its products rarely surprised me. That last part was true. But 'rarely surprised me' is not a technical specification.

I'll say the thing I now tell every new person on our team: choosing a cable by manufacturer name alone is one of the most expensive mistakes in this industry. It makes you feel decisive. It doesn't make you correct.

The Indianapolis Order That Made Me Wake Up

In September 2022, I sent a purchase order for 20,000 feet of Cat6A riser cable. The PO said 'General Cable Cat6A 23 AWG riser.' I remember thinking it was safe because General Cable's Indianapolis team had been reliable for years. The reel arrived on schedule. It looked perfect.

The problem showed up when our contractor started terminating. The Fluke tester did not like what it saw. We re-terminated a few jacks, still bad. We checked the permanent link, still bad. Then I looked at the part number on the datasheet and realized what I'd done: I had specified U/UTP. The project drawings called for F/UTP. Same manufacturer. Same category. Same riser rating. Wrong cable.

That mistake cost $3,950 in re-pull and scrapped cable, plus seven days on the schedule. I still kick myself for not reading the drawing notes before touching the catalog.

What the Marshall Texas Plant Taught Me

In March 2023, I visited General Cable's Marshall Texas plant. The trip was supposed to be about an industrial control cable order. The useful part didn't happen in a meeting room. It happened on the production floor, where a QC tech was checking jacket thickness on SOOW cord with a gauge that looked older than me.

I asked why they still did it manually. The answer: because the automatic gauge could drift. That small moment got stuck in my head. A plant that pays attention to a gauge drift is a plant that understands how cheap cable becomes an expensive failure.

Did I need General Cable's Marshall Texas plant specifically? No. But the visit taught me to ask questions that a datasheet can't answer. What is the QC hold point? How are failed lots handled? Can I see the test log? Those questions have saved me more money than any brand preference ever did.

Cypress vs Infinity? You're Asking the Wrong Question

A few months ago, a buyer forwarded me an online comparison with the headline 'Cypress vs Infinity' and asked why I wasn't drafting a spec for the winner. It was a fair challenge. On the surface, those two product lines look similar: same category, same purpose, same market.

I had to explain that I needed the building plans, not the product names. The decision for that job depended on three things: the fire-rating required by the local code, the shielding needed for 10GBASE-T, and the bend radius at the patch panel. Once I had those, the product choice made itself. (Should mention: the rep I talked to asked for the same information before sending samples.)

Put another way: when I compared those two datasheets side by side, I finally understood why the jacket rating matters more than the brand. The name is a useful starting point. It's not the conclusion.

General Cable Is Now Part of a Group—and That Doesn't Change the Physics

General Cable is part of the Prysmian Group, and anyone who doesn't acknowledge the benefit is not being honest. The group gives customers global resources, copper sourcing leverage, and R&D that a single plant can't match. As of January 2025, that structure is still a big reason I quote General Cable first.

But 'global resources' don't make a loose termination better. A Cat6a cable still has to pass TIA-568.2-D. A THHN conductor still has to follow the ampacity tables in NFPA 70, Article 310. A riser cable still needs the right UL listing for the building. Those fundamentals haven't changed, and they won't change with a merger.

What has changed is the number of ways to be wrong. The old best practice of finding a good brand and never questioning it is, in my opinion, dangerous in 2025.

What I Do Now, After $51,000 of My Own Stupid Decisions

I don't think I'm smarter now. I just have more scars. Our team now uses a short checklist before any cable order goes out:

  • Start with the application, not the brand. What is the environment? What fire rating? What performance class?
  • Write the part number. If the datasheet doesn't have one, find another cable.
  • Ask for the lot test report. A cable reel should have traceable test documentation.
  • Check the jacket printing. The markings are a legal spec, not decoration.

Dodged a bullet last spring when I caught a mismatch between a stated plenum rating and the marking on the actual box. One more day and we would have installed 3,000 feet of cable in a space that requires plenum-rated products. That checklist, irritating as it is, paid for itself in one morning.

Oh, and the checklist isn't just for junior staff. I use it too. My name goes on the PO, and my career gets affected when something fails. That's why it exists.

So Let Me Make the Argument Clear

You might say I'm overstating it. After all, General Cable has more than a hundred years of history. The Prysmian Group has deep pockets. Those are real advantages.

But a spec that says just 'General Cable' is not a spec. Neither is 'Infinity' or 'Cypress' or any other product-family name. The manufacturer is a source. The product number is the fact. The application is the boss.

I still use General Cable on most of my projects. I also check every part number, every jacket marking, and every test report before I commit. That's not disrespect to the brand. That's respect for the installation.

The brand is where you start the search, not where you end the decision. I learned that the hard way. You can learn it the cheaper way.
