Wednesday, 4:47 PM. I was kneeling next to a pull string under a school ceiling, holding a spool of cable that had just arrived. The label on the box said General Cable Cat6 U/UTP 23 AWG. Underneath, in smaller type, it said Prysmian Group. And in that moment, I realized I had just helped install 1,100 feet of the wrong cable in a plenum ceiling.
The Order That Looked Fine On Paper
I have handled low-voltage cable orders for a mid-sized electrical contractor for about twelve years. I have bought General Cable for a lot of that time. It is not the cheapest line in the catalog, but it has been consistent. When Prysmian Group acquired General Cable back in 2018, I remember reading the press release and thinking: okay, the label will change. Then I went back to work.
This was not my first cable mistake. In my first year ordering cable in 2017, I selected stranded patch cable for a 300-foot horizontal run and had to re-pull it. That mistake cost $890 and taught me to read conductor type. So I knew better. None of that stopped me from making this mistake.

That was the real mistake. Not the acquisition. Not the ceiling.
The Ceiling Plenum Moment
The first spools arrived in the new distribution markings. On the outside, everything looked right. General Cable branding. Cat6. 23 AWG. I signed the delivery receipt, and the crew started pulling.
By the end of the day, they had run cable from the IDF to four access point locations. The pull felt fine. The cable was stiff but manageable. No red flags.
Then the foreman sent me a photo of the jacket print. It showed CMR, not CMP.
For anyone not steeped in fire codes, CMR means riser-rated. CMP means plenum-rated. In a plenum ceiling—the space above a suspended ceiling used for HVAC air return—most jurisdictions require CMP or an equivalent low-smoke jacket. Riser cable in a plenum is a code violation and a genuine fire safety issue. It did not matter that the cable was genuine General Cable or that it passed the Cat6 test. It was the wrong jacket for the environment.
That phone call made my blood pressure spike. I had approved the PO. I had looked at the box and thought: General Cable, Cat6, same as always. But the old SKU in my distributor favorites had been mapped to a CMR product after the Prysmian Group integration, not the CMP version I used on the last project.
Yes, I checked. The username on my account had the old part number saved from a previous order. The previous order was in a mechanical room with fire-rated construction, so CMR was acceptable. This one was above a ceiling plenum.
I called our distributor. The sales rep was professional and patient. He read the current data sheet line by line. He then pointed out that the part number I sent matches the current CMR SKU, and the CMP version has a different ending. In other words: they shipped what I ordered. The mistake was on my side.
The Rework Math
The electrical inspector had not seen it yet, but our own quality process caught it. We talked about options. Rerouting the cable outside the plenum was not realistic without opening up walls, and the school could not accept that kind of disruption. So we tore out the installed runs.
Total damage: 22 spools of CMR cable that we had to return—some spools were cut, so not fully refundable—plus 25 new spools of General Cable Cat6 CMP, and labor to re-pull. I am not 100% sure of the exact total because it landed in multiple project cost codes, but the rough number was about $4,700 in extra material and labor plus a one-week schedule delay. The delay was worse than the money.
They shipped exactly what I approved. The PO said General Cable Cat6, but it did not say CMP. That absence was the defect.
What stung most was that I had been the one preaching: specify the jacket, not just the brand. I skipped my own rule because I was in a hurry.
After the dust settled, I went back to the original drawing. I wanted to understand how a generic note like Category 6 had been translated into such a specific miss. I realized that too much of the purchase decision had been delegated to a portal search. In the past, when a manufacturer had a narrower catalog, a generic request might still lead to the right SKU because a human sales rep would ask. Now most orders start from an online quote template.
The other thing that surprised me was how many online searches treat 'General Cable Prysmian' as one interchangeable label. They are not interchangeable in a purchase order. The product brand may say General Cable, but the legal entity and the distribution channels are part of Prysmian Group. That affects warranties, support, and part-number continuity.
What I Now Do Before Any Cat6 Order
After that project, I built a checklist. It has saved us at least four similar mistakes since—that I know of. It looks boring, but boring is useful:
- Download the current data sheet from the manufacturer's official page. Do not rely on the distributor portal screenshot.
- Check the ownership context. General Cable is still sold as General Cable, but it is part of Prysmian Group. Part numbers can change as product lines are migrated.
- Write the jacket rating on the purchase order in plain English: CMP plenum, CMR riser, or LSZH, depending on the space.
- Ask the warehouse to photograph the box print on the first delivery before the crew starts pulling.
- If the network design includes new switches, check the transceiver and cabling support on the actual switch model. A Cisco vs. another-vendor debate does not replace reading the cable requirements.
That last item came from my next project. We were planning a Cisco vs. another vendor rollout, and the engineer started asking about switch ports. I had the cable data sheet ready. It made the meeting shorter and less expensive.
Maybe the lesson sounds simple: don't order cable by muscle memory. But what changed for me after this job was a better understanding of the industry's evolution.
A brand like General Cable does not disappear when a large group like Prysmian acquires it. But the catalog, packaging, and SKU numbers can evolve. The fundamentals have not changed—you still need to match the cable to the fire code, the distance, and the application. The execution, however, requires more verification than it did in 2018. A five-year-old favorite in your ordering portal is not a design document.
If you ever find yourself typing a cable part number from memory, stop. Take ten minutes. Confirm the jacket rating, the data sheet, and the exact SKU. It may not lower your blood pressure in the moment, but it will keep you from counting rework hours in a school ceiling at 4:47 on a Wednesday.
