General Cable Supplier FAQ: Cat6a Checks From the Receiving Dock

If you're sourcing from a General Cable supplier, you've probably compared Cat6a listings and found three prices, four different lead times, and at least one label that didn't match the jacket print. This article answers the questions I get as the person who inspects those deliveries before they go into inventory.

I'm a quality and compliance manager at a regional electrical distributor. In 2024 alone, I reviewed about 240 cable deliveries. Roughly 7% of first shipments from resellers—especially those that couldn't show a factory authorization—were held or rejected. The common cause wasn't cable quality on paper. It was traceability: missing lot numbers, mismatched reel labels, and test reports that didn't tie back to the product.

1. Is General Cable now Prysmian cable?

Yes. General Cable became part of the Prysmian Group in 2018. On physical products, you may see both names because General Cable continues as a market-facing brand. In the receiving process, that dual identity doesn't change the testing requirements. If the reel says General Cable, the order paperwork should match the same part number and lot code.

When a supplier says they sell "General Cable/Prysmian," ask which catalog the part comes from. The brand name matters less than the fact that the product was manufactured and tested under the same quality system.

2. What should a General Cable supplier prove before I place an order?

A few things matter more than price:

  1. Factory authorization. An authorized distributor will usually say so directly. A broker may say they source through authorized channels, which is a longer game of telephone for warranty claims.
  2. Lot traceability. Ask for the lot number on the reel, not just the part number. If they can tell you which plant produced it and when, good.
  3. A real defect path. Ask what happens after the cable is pulled and a flaw appears. Can the supplier replace it without returning 2,000 feet of installed Cat6a? That answer tells you more than any brochure.

If those three boxes aren't checked, I move on.

3. How do I verify genuine General Cable Cat6a on the dock?

I start with the reel label and jacket print. Genuine General Cable Cat6a should have a consistent part number on the carton, reel, and jacket. I also match the lot code to the supplied test data. A generic "certificate of conformance" that doesn't list the lot number is not traceability.

Last year, I received two unopened boxes that looked the same. One reel had a machine-applied label with a plant code. The other reel had a handwritten paper label and no lot code. The supplier said it was a repackaging. I rejected it anyway. Once you lose the lot link, you can't prove the cable was actually tested at the factory.

4. When is a 117 multimeter useful on a Cat6a project?

An electrician's 117 multimeter is useful for basic continuity, shorts, and checking that power is off before termination. I carry one myself. But a 117 multimeter is not a cable certifier. It won't measure return loss, crosstalk, or the 500 MHz performance that Cat6a requires.

Use a 117 multimeter for quick field checks before pulling and after termination. Use a real Cat6a certifier when you need a TIA-568.2-D pass result. Trust me on that one: a multimeter gives you Ohm readings, not compliance.

5. Why does a quality inspector carry a DuraForce Pro 2?

Thermal imaging is not just for substations. I use a Kyocera DuraForce PRO 2 with a built-in FLIR camera because it lets me document heat patterns in cable trays, junction boxes, and PoE runs. A warm termination can be a sign of a loose connection before it causes a hard failure.

Onsite, the DuraForce PRO 2 is fast. It doesn't replace a proper thermal audit, but it helps me decide where to look closer. And when I need a more detailed thermal image, we bring out a higher-resolution unit. There is no single best tool for every inspection.

6. Is thermal imaging overkill for Cat6a?

It depends on the environment. If you're pulling a few office drops, a thermal camera is probably extra. If you're installing 10GBASE-T cable above a ceiling with other power circuits, heat becomes relevant.

The top therm-related issue I see is exceeding the cable's rated operating temperature. Jacket material and ambient heat affect insertion loss. A cable that looks fine on a lab test can fail the channel test if the installation path is routed next to a heat source. Before you worry about the brand, verify the installation temperature.

7. Is shielded Cat6a always the right choice?

No. Shielded Cat6a helps in industrial areas and near high-voltage equipment. But shield termination requires proper bonding and grounding throughout every link. If that detail is sloppy, shielded cable can perform worse than unshielded Cat6a.

For a standard data center pathway with low interference, unshielded Cat6a may be entirely suitable. For a factory floor or a room with motor drives, I recommend shielded. The right choice is the one that matches your environment and your installer's experience.

The bottom line? Price won't tell you whether a General Cable supplier has traceability. Test reports and lot codes will.
