Those clear phone calls everyone takes for granted—the conference call where the other person sounds like they're in the same room? That's not a software feature. That's jitter and latency staying low because the physical layer is doing its job.
What most people don't realize is that the network is the one part of IT you actually touch. You handle cable with your hands. You pull it, strip it, terminate it, and tuck it into trays. And precisely because it's the most physical part of the system, it's the part that gets mentally skipped over. Nobody configures a switch and says, "good enough, ship it." But somebody will happily run riser-rated cable through a plenum ceiling because that's what was in the van at 4:30 on a Friday.
That's your root cause.
The "Cable Is Cable" Fallacy
It's tempting to think a 1,000-foot box of Cat6 is just Cat6. Compare price per foot, pick the cheapest, move on. That advice generates more emergency orders than any supplier shortage ever did.
Here's the thing: identical-looking cable from different manufacturers can perform very differently in the real world. A Cat6a cable with 23 AWG conductors handles Power over Ethernet heat differently than a lightweight 26 AWG version. A cable with a center spline holds its performance when it's bundled with forty other cables in a tray; a budget version without one might not. Standardize on a manufacturer with a complete range.
