Stop Defaulting to VNTC for Every Control Run: A Procurement Manager's Take

I've managed electrical and control cable purchasing for a 190-person food processing plant for six years. I've approved roughly $180,000 in wire and cable orders in that time, and I've watched engineers drop VNTC tray cable into bill of materials after bill of materials out of pure habit. I get why. It's proven. It's easy to quote. General Cable builds it to a standard that doesn't create field problems. None of that makes it the right default for every circuit.

Here's my position, and it's not the soft middle-ground version: VNTC is a specialist tool, not a default. Use it for long open tray runs where its continuous jacket, tray rating, and oil resistance actually earn their keep. Stop using it for short panel jumps, short motor leads, and anything that's going to be pulled through conduit. Do that, and you can cut 15-20% from your cable budget without changing a single function.

That's not a theory. The numbers made me look dumb until I changed the habit.

Where VNTC Wastes Money

In Q3 2024, a controls engineer sent me a parts list for 42 motor drops in a new packaging area. Every drop was 15-30 feet from a junction box to a motor starter, and every single one was specified as 4-conductor 12 AWG VNTC. I almost approved it. Then I pulled up recent prices.

VNTC in the quantities we buy was running about $1.86 per foot. Forty-two drops at a 22-foot average is 924 feet. The material line for cable alone was $1,718. When I re-specified those same circuits with a lighter flexible control cable, still approved for the environment and still rated for vibration, the cable material dropped to $924. Same circuits, same function, almost half the material cost. None of that VNTC was doing anything a lighter cable couldn't do.

So glad I caught that before the PO went out. One call to the foreman, and the spec was changed before anything hit the warehouse.

The rule I now use: if a cable doesn't sit in a tray for most of its route, it doesn't need a tray rating.

Conduit Fill

And for the love of good electrical practice, stop pulling VNTC through conduit. The jacket eats up conduit fill, the bend radius gets stubborn, and the tray rating becomes useless the second it's enclosed. If you're running conduit, spec conductors made for conduit—THHN, MTW, or whatever your local code requires. Tray cable belongs in a tray.

Where VNTC Earns Its Keep

Now the part people don't expect: for long horizontal tray runs, I won't spec anything else. VNTC is underrated for long distances.

On a 2023 packaging line expansion, we compared two options on 18 identical 180-foot runs from an MCC to remote I/O panels. The VNTC-in-tray quote came in at $9,300 installed. The alternative, individual THHN conductors in galvanized conduit, came in at $12,100 installed. That's $2,800 more for the conduit version, plus 18 extra junction boxes and twice as many pull points. The VNTC version wasn't just cheaper—it had fewer splice points to inspect during commissioning and fewer places for a connection to loosen years later.

That's the total cost story most people miss. The per-foot price of VNTC can be higher, but the installed system cost is lower on long runs because you lose the conduit labor, the pull labor, and a whole category of connection points. And the continuous cable design means fewer failure modes over time.

General Cable—now part of the Prysmian group—has been in the wire business for over 150 years. The VNTC line comes from the same manufacturing culture that gave us the Rome Wire Company legacy, the one that made "Romex" the household name for NM cable. That's not nostalgia. When you're hanging 1,000 feet of cable in a dusty production hall, you want the jacket chemistry and copper quality that come from decades of paying attention.

The "One Cable for Everything" Trap

I know the counterargument: standardizing on VNTC simplifies inventory, training, and the estimator's job. One SKU on the shelf. One set of connectors. One answer to every "what cable?" question. That logic looks good in a meeting and fails on a spreadsheet.

When I added a second approved control cable to our inventory, the carrying cost was maybe $1,200 a year and a few square feet of shelf space. The savings from not overspending on VNTC for short drops paid for that shelf space several times over. Standardizing on the wrong tool is not efficiency. It's just organized waste.

So here's my advice. Write a spec rule that says: VNTC for open tray runs over 100 feet. Lighter flexible cable or individual conductors in conduit for anything under 30 feet and anything routed in pipe. That rule has held up for six years, and it's the reason I can say what I said at the start without apologizing.

VNTC is a workhorse, not a cure-all. Buy it for what it does well. Stop buying it for what it doesn't.

This pricing was accurate as of Q4 2024. Copper and cable prices change quickly, so verify current quotes before you set a budget. The principle, though, hasn't changed: route-based specifications save money. Cable-by-habit costs it.
