I've been handling cable and connectivity orders for about eight years now — first as a junior buyer at a mid-sized electrical contractor, now as a procurement lead for a data center buildout group. Somewhere in that time, I made just about every rookie mistake you can make with General Cable and its cheaper competitors. In 2019, I ordered 24 spools of what I thought was equivalent Cat6 from a no-name supplier. The price looked great. The spec sheet looked identical. Then we tested the runs and about a third of them failed at 35 meters instead of the promised 100. That was my first real lesson in why general-cable has a reputation that carries a premium.
This isn't a sales pitch. I still buy budget cable for certain jobs. But I want to walk you through the comparison the way I wish someone had for me back then — not as a corporate brochure, but as a field-level breakdown with the mistakes, the test results, and the scenarios where the cheaper option is genuinely fine.
How I'm Comparing These Two Options
When you're choosing between General Cable and a lower-cost alternative, the conversation usually goes one of two ways. Either your purchasing manager says, "It's all the same copper and plastic, just buy the cheap stuff," or your senior engineer says, "We only spec General Cable, period." Both are wrong in certain contexts.
I'm going to compare them across four dimensions that actually matter for my work and probably yours:
- Conductor quality and consistency — what's actually inside the jacket
- Product verification and traceability — can you prove what you bought?
- Application fit — SOOW vs. TC vs. THHN, Cat6 vs. Cat6a vs. fiber
- Total cost of ownership — not just the unit price but the rework, the downtime, and the risk
That last one is where I got burned. The $450 I saved on that 2019 Cat6 order turned into roughly $3,200 in labor, testing, and replacement material. And we were a week behind schedule. That's the math that doesn't show up on the invoice.
Conductor Quality: The Copper Question
Here's where I've seen the biggest gap — and also the most unfair assumptions.
General Cable uses high-grade copper that consistently meets ASTM B3 and B8 standards. Their Cat6 typically uses 23 AWG solid bare copper. The cheap stuff? It's often copper-clad aluminum (CCA), even when the box doesn't say so. I didn't know this until our network contractor pointed out that our "Cat6" runs were running hot at 55°C at about 12 watts. CCA has about 40% higher DC resistance than solid copper. That means more attenuation, more heat, and shorter maximum channel length.
Here's the part that surprised me: not all budget cable is CCA. Some of it is genuine 23 AWG solid copper. In 2023, I tested three budget brands against a spool of General Cable Cat6. Two of the three met the basic electrical specs on a fluke tester. One didn't. The problem is you can't tell without testing, and most installers don't have a $6,000 certifier on the truck.
The General Cable advantage in this dimension is consistency, not magic. When I open a box of their Cat6, I know the copper is solid, the gauge is correct, and the jacket is rated properly. That certainty has a dollar value, even if we're just talking about the peace of mind on a 300-drop job.

This is the dimension that made me look foolish in front of a client, and it's the one that most comparison guides skip entirely.
In 2022, we completed an industrial retrofit in Ohio. The specification called for General Cable SOOW cord, 10 AWG, 600V. The client's inspector asked for mill test reports and certs of conformance. If you've never had to produce those, here's what happens with a reputable manufacturer: you call your distributor, they pull the lot traceability report, and you get a clean PDF within a day.
With the budget brand we used on a different job? The distributor didn't have mill certs. They didn't have lot traceability. They had a note saying "manufacturer guarantees compliance." That's worthless in a formal submittal. We ended up having to pay for third-party testing — at our own expense — to satisfy the engineer. That cost us more than the savings on the wire.
General Cable, as part of Prysmian Group, has a well-established documentation trail. You can get material certifications, test reports, and even specific chemical/physical property data if your project requires it. For any job that involves an inspector, an engineer of record, or a spec that says "or approved equal," this documentation is part of the value.
One honest caveat: for smaller orders through a non-specialty distributor, getting that paperwork can take a few days. It's not automatic. If your distributor says, "we'll email it right over," and it doesn't arrive, push harder. But the data exists, which is more than I can say for some budget manufacturers.
Application Fit: When the Cheap Cable Is Actually Fine
Now the part that might surprise you: I'm not recommending General Cable for every job.
For short indoor patch cables, for temporary installations that will be removed in a year, or for non-critical low-voltage control wiring — a decent budget brand can be responsible. I know a maintenance supervisor who runs cheap VNTC tray cable for temporary pump connections. He tests every reel before it goes in. His failure rate is about 2%. For that use case, the premium isn't justified.
For horizontal runs in a new office building where you want a 25-year service life? I'm not taking that risk with an unknown brand. The labor cost to replace a failed run is 20 times the material cost difference. It's not even close.
Here's the rule I've developed:
- If the application is permanent, hard to access, sensitive to interference, or part of a certified system, buy General Cable (or an equivalent Tier 1 brand).
- If the application is temporary, easily accessible, non-critical, or where a failure is a minor annoyance rather than an outage, the budget brand might be acceptable — but only after testing a sample.
When I say test a sample, I mean it literally. Cut 20 feet, terminate it, and run a wire map test. Check the jacket markings. Do a DC resistance test. If it passes and the price is right, use it. If you can't do even that, don't gamble.
Total Cost of Ownership: The Real Dollar Math
Let me give you two concrete numbers from my own experience.
First, the 2019 Cat6 order I mentioned. I saved about $450 vs. the General Cable bid. The failures, testing, and replacement cost me $3,200 in materials and labor, plus a 6-day schedule penalty. If I'd billed that time at our standard rate, the real cost was closer to $6,800. The $450 "savings" turned into a net loss of more than 10x.
Second, a 2024 SOOW order for a pump station. The budget quote was $1,870. General Cable via our regular distributor was $2,340. Difference: $470. This job had an easy pull path, we had mill certs because the client requested them, and we opted for General Cable. Total project cost: $38,000. The $470 premium represented 1.2% of the project value. If that's what's protecting a $38,000 install and a client relationship, that's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
That's the way to think about it, in my opinion. Not "is General Cable worth the premium?" but "what percentage of the total project is the premium, and what are the consequences of a failure?".
When General Cable Doesn't Make Sense
I don't want to pretend it's always the right answer.
If you're a small handyman or an in-house maintenance guy buying a 50-foot extension cord or a few feet of THHN for a machine repair, the General Cable brand at a big-box retailer can be pricey. You could get a lesser-known brand for 40% less. And honestly? For a single short run in a low-stress application, you'll probably never notice the difference.
I also wouldn't spec General Cable if you need something exotic and they don't make it. Their catalog is huge, but it's not infinite. Sometimes you need a specific impedance, a specific jacket compound, or a custom print. In that case, a specialty manufacturer is the right call. Don't force a square peg.
And if your distributor quotes a ridiculous lead time for General Cable because it's on backorder — which happened to us in Q3 2024 — then you have to make a lateral move to an equivalent Tier 1 brand. Don't drop to a non-verified budget brand at the last minute. The lead time problem doesn't change the quality math.
Which Should You Choose?
Here's my practical checklist, the one I use for our own purchasing:
Buy General Cable when:
- The installation is permanent and inaccessible after construction
- The job requires certified test results or mill traceability
- You're installing for a client who will hold you responsible for 10+ years
- The premium is under 5% of the total project cost
Consider a budget brand when:
- The application is temporary or easily replaceable
- You can test a sample reel and verify the specs yourself
- There's no documentation/engineering requirement
- The project value is small enough that a failure is a minor inconvenience
And if you're on the fence, ask one question: "If this cable fails in two years, what does it cost me?" Not the wire. The labor, the downtime, the client trust, the potential liability. Then compare that number to the premium.
I still buy budget cable. I just stopped pretending it's the same product. General Cable has earned its price tag on consistency, traceability, and the peace of mind that a 150-year-old manufacturer (now part of Prysmian Group) brings to the table. That's not hype. That's a risk calculation. And in this business, the cheap guy pays twice.
