I’m the person who gets called when the lead time says six weeks and the client needs it in 48 hours. 1. Jacket: where cheap cable starts to lie
The first thing I do with any spool is read the jacket. If the print is smeared, missing, or says “CMX” when the job calls for CMP plenum-rated cable, the rest doesn’t matter. Per NFPA 70 (2023), plenum spaces require listed cable, and a missing UL mark is a hard no in my book.
When I search for “General Cable photos” to double-check a spec, I’m not looking for marketing shots. I’m looking at jacket imprint legibility. General Cable doesn’t always have the prettiest packaging, but the print on their cable is clean and consistent. Budget cable often has inconsistent print that fades after a few bends.
Honestly, this is not a brand loyalty thing. It’s a safety and inspection thing. If the fire marshal or the building owner asks for documentation, you need a clear jacket print and a traceable manufacturer. A no-name spool gives you nothing.
2. Copper: the weight test
This is where the “but the specs are the same” argument falls apart.
In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: I bought a spool based on the spec sheet and ignored the physical copper. Cost me a $600 redo. The cable passed a continuity check, but the pairs were light gauge and the termination consistency was terrible.
With General Cable Technologies, the copper weight is predictable. You can feel the difference when you strip the jacket. The pairs stay twisted, the conductors don’t deform as easily, and the color orientation is consistent across the whole spool. General Cable Technologies publishes connector recommendations for their Cat6A cable. Does that mean you have to use their exact list? No. But it means the termination guidelines are based on actual testing, not “should work” guesses.
4. What a multimeter can and can’t tell you
A multimeter is useful, but it only gives you part of the picture. It can tell you if there’s continuity. It can tell you if you have a short between pairs. It cannot tell you if the cable will pass a performance test at 500 MHz.
I always carry a multimeter to emergency jobs, but I don’t trust it as the final word. I’ve seen links pass continuity with a $90 multimeter and then fail a proper field tester by a wide margin. The reason is usually the connector or the pair twist, not the copper itself.
So if you’re doing a quick check before a cutover, use the multimeter. Just know what it means. It proves “not broken” at the most basic level. It doesn’t prove “certifiable.”
5. Lead time: the part nobody prices
This is the dimension I care about the most because it’s my job. Time, feasibility, and worst-case risk.
In March 2024, 36 hours before a data center cutover, a client realized the riser cable on site had the wrong fire rating. Normal replacement lead time was eight days. The contract had a $50,000 penalty clause. We found a matching General Cable spool from a distributor two states away, paid $780 in freight, and made the window. The client’s alternative was a full shutdown and a breached deadline.
This is the part of the comparison that doesn’t show up on a price list. And one more thing: if the project involves power over Ethernet or high-density fiber, the difference gets bigger. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven’t changed—copper, connectors, and fire ratings still rule—but the performance requirements around PoE and higher data rates have raised the bar.
The “why are phones so strong?” question
I get asked a version of this all the time: “But our phones work fine, so why does the cable matter?” Some clients literally ask, “Why are phones so strong?”
What they mean is: why does a cell phone keep a solid connection while the wired network keeps dropping? The answer isn’t the phone. It’s the network behind it—the cable, the connectors, the grounding, and the path back to the switch.
The numbers said the budget spool was the smart buy. My gut said otherwise. Now I look at it this way: a cheap phone can still make a call on a solid network, but the strongest phone in the world can’t fix a bad cable plant.
So before you order, check the jacket, weigh the spool, test the connector, and give yourself a buffer. If you’re still unsure, ask the vendor for General Cable photos of the actual spool label and the jacket print. A supplier with nothing to hide will send them within an hour.
